Wheat Germ Breadsticks
So easy to make and so delicious — these breadsticks are equally good as an accompaniment to a meal or eaten as a snack. Because raw wheat germ is high in natural oils, be sure to buy raw wheat germ in a package, preferably vacuum-packed, rather than in bulk, for the best flavor and freshness.
- 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 1/4 cups raw wheat germ
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons roasted sesame seeds
- 1 1/2 cup milk, soy milk, or nut milk
- 1/3 cup canola oil
- 2 tablespoons honey
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Combine whole wheat flour, wheat germ, salt, and toasted sesame seeds in a medium-sized bowl.
Thoroughly mix together milk, oil, and honey in a blender and then add to the dry ingredients in the bowl. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 3 minutes or so, until it holds together quite well.
Roll dough to 1/4/-1/2 inch thickness and cut into sticks about 5 inches long and 3/4-1 inch wide. Holding the top of each breadstick with one hand, twist the dough with the other to form a spiral shape, then place each breadstick son an oiled baking sheet.
Bake until golden brown, between 20–30 minutes, checking progress at 20 minutes. Transfer baked wheat germ breadsticks to a cooling rack, allowing them to thoroughly cool before serving.
